ENGH 324 - 001: English Renaissance Drama

Shakespeare didn't write in a vacuum. He was part of a brilliant group of playwrights who produced work with the same rich language and physical and intellectual energy, but also with a biting, satirical humor and a spectacular violence that Shakespeare did not usually produce. These are plays about seedy English fairs and lurid Italian courts. Featuring soul selling, king deposing, seduction, lust, incest, poisoned bibles, poisoned arrows of love, and the search for the best roast pig. Find out why the Puritans closed the theaters down.

Authors studied include: Kyd, Marlowe, Jonson, Webster, Cary, and Ford.
